Interview:
Where did the idea come from?
The idea for the Invivo Bag came from a desire to enable the rekindling of the relationship between people and plants. As cities become concrete jungles we lose the calm connection to nature that plants confer. The Invivo Bag is an attempt to bring a little piece of greenery into an urban setting without compromising contemporary design trends.
What is it made out of?
The bag is cut and sewn from a fully recyclable polyethylene sheet. The growing medium that fills the bag is variable and we continue to experiment with new growing media. Currently, we sell the bag with a RockWool or Fytocell filling. RockWool is a well established hydroponic growing medium. It is extremely water retentive so that in tandem with the bag covering – very high water efficiency is achieved. Fytocell is a new technology that is primarily used for green roof projects.
What are the benefits of the product?
Plants grown on the unused sunlit exteriors of buildings absorb the sun’s rays and help keep the building cooler. This may diminish the need for air conditioning. Plants also provide food and habitat for insects, which attract birds – so this may return a bit of nature into our cities. If the plants grown are edible, then they provide a source of self sustenance for the city, and if they are ornamental then they improve quality of life with their natural aesthetic. Needless to say, we currently do not use the exterior side of buildings so growing plants there does not come instead of anything else.
Who should buy it?
Anyone who wants to add a bit of green to their home. Unit dwellers can particularly benefit from the ability to have a vertical garden out of their windows and on their balcony walls.
What plants are suitable for the bag?
It mainly depends on the lighting conditions of the wall on which you hang the bag: Have a look at the amount of sun the bag receives and choose accordingly. Herbs and tea plants are particularly useful to have around.
